On March 2, 2009, the region's first YouthBuild class began in Manistee. Nine applicants were selected for the pilot class. After passing a mental toughness preparedness program, the youth learned First Aid, CPR, OSHA 10 safety standards, and began their vocational and academic training. Later, the youth assisted with building a Habitat for Humanity house and several students were able to earn their GED.

Entrepreneurship Class Helps Students Learn About Business
Students from the Manistee site of YouthBuild Northwest are learning about business through an entrepreneurship class offered by the Small Business & Technology Development Center. YouthBuild Students Visit Sustainable Businesses
Students from the Manistee site of YouthBuild Northwest visited two local businesses, Food for Thought and Douglas Valley Organic Vineyard Community, so they could learn about sustainability and entrepreneurship. YouthBuild Helps Friends of the Manistee County Library
Students from the Manistee site of YouthBuild Northwest built a handicap ramp for The Friends of the Manistee County Library. The ramp will allow The Friends of the Library to hold their used book sales in a building next to the library. Watch the video to find out more about the ramp and what the students learned by building it.
Students from the Manistee site of YouthBuild Northwest helped the Grand Traverse Regional Land Conservancy with a dune restoration project at Arcadia Dunes. Watch the video to see how the project helped the students learn about civic service and the environment.
YouthBuild Northwest Visits Ferris State University
Students with YouthBuild Northwest are used to blending classroom education with learning construction skills. But the students from YouthBuild's Manistee and Traverse City sites had a chance to see what it would be like if they took their construction education to the next level. They visited Ferris State University to learn about the school's Construction Management and Heating, Ventilation, Air Conditioning and Refrigeration (HVACR) programs.
Mental Toughness Training Provided to New Class of 2010
The candidates visited Camp Daggett and Beaver Island. Watch the video to see how it will help to determine the right fit for participants in the YouthBuild program.
