What is MPRI?

The Michigan Prisoner ReEntry Initiative is a cooperative effort led by the Michigan Department of Corrections, and involving multiple other state offices and many community organizations. Its objective is to create safer neighborhoods and better citizens. MPRI involves planning for successful Re-Entry for parolees into their home community from well before the prison release date.

The Michigan Prisoner Re-Entry Initiative has proven to reduce recidivism. Prior to MPRI, the return rate for parolees in Michigan was 48% within the first 24 months. The return rate for 1,200 MPRI participants, was 23%-a 77% success rate-within the first 24 months. This represents significant progress.

The Michigan Department of Corrections announced a $9,000,000 net savings from the first year of the program.

Vision

The VISION of the Michigan Prisoner Re-Entry Initiative is that every inmate released from prison will have the tools needed to succeed in the community.

Mission

The MISSION of the MPRI is to reduce crime by implementing a seamless plan of services and supervision developed with each prisoner -- delivered through state and local collaboration -- from the time of their entry to prison through their transition, reintegration, and aftercare in the community.

Goals

The GOALS of the MPRI are to: 1) Promote public safety by reducing the threat of harm to persons and their property by former prisoners in the communities to which those offenders return; and 2) Increase success rates of former prisoners who transition from prison by fostering effective risk management and treatment programming, accountability, and community and victim participation.
