Social Attitudes

Goals:
Create positive changes in attitudes about poverty among service providers, low-income persons, and the community at large.

Achievements:
Conducting “Focus Groups” in five counties to collect attitudes about poverty from service providers, low-income persons, and the community at large;
Training a cadre of PRI volunteers as members of a “Speakers Bureau” to increase understanding and dialogue in the community; giving presentations to interested local service clubs and community collaboratives.

Plans for 2007:
Following completion of the PRI "Poverty Insight Project" comprehensive survey mailed to more than 10,000 households, reconvene Focus Group participants to involve them in activities of the Social Attitudes Issue Group;
Making available and facilitating a series of “Crisis of Poverty" simulation workshops via intrested area agencies and organizations that agree to sponsor, recruit and enroll 50 or more workshop participants;
Improve awareness of language usage differences related to income groups;
Create a region-wide book-reading initiative using a book about poverty; Help coordinate the group of Donna Beegle Opportunities for Success conference (May 2007) "navigators" to schedule a series of ongoing "close to home" neighbor follow-up meetings + social gatherings in each of the region's five counties.
