Petoskey Area Transportation Study
Transportation in the greater Petoskey community has been the subject of continuous debate and discussion in recent years. The Petoskey Area Transportation Study was a means for organizing public input and finding implementable solutions to transportation issues. The study process was guided by a steering committee comprised of local elected and appointed officials and staff, called the Petoskey Area Transportation Committee (PATC). Northwest Michigan Council of Governments administered and provided technical assistance for this process. The Corradino Group, a Michigan-based firm with extensive experience in transportation and land use scenario planning, conducted the study with funding provided by the Michigan Department of Transportation (MDOT).
Objectives of the Study
The objectives of the 18-month study were to accomplish the following, with public involvement as a prominent part of each phase:
- Identify potential local road improvements and other ways to relieve congestion and increase mobility in the area;
- Consider the impacts that proposed transportation improvements and chnges in the local economy will have on the area;
- Find ways to protect this area's rural, residential and commercial areas through land use and community development policies that complement the transportation system.
The purpose of the study was to identify potential changes to the existing roads that will enhance transportation patterns while having the least impact on land use and historical development patterns. This study was completed in December of 2007.
