Northwest Michigan Sustainable Business Forum

About Us

In June 2004, the Northwest Michigan Council of Governments and the Small Business and Technical Development Center (SBTDC) sponsored a meeting to explore the development of a Sustainable Business Forum in northwest, lower Michigan. The outcome was to look to see if these services could help the businesses in the region save money and protect the environment.

A year later in 2005, introductory presentations were made in Traverse City and Manistee with over 60 people in attendance. Bill Stough from the Sustainable Research Group in Grand Rapids, gave a presentation on all the benefits of being a sustainable business on a local, regional, national, and global scale. He had assisted with the creation of the West Michigan Sustainable Business Forum and spoke about the opportunities of having a Sustainable Business Forum in this region.

From that presentation and interest, the Northwest Michigan Council of Governments formed and put into action the Northwest Michigan Sustainable Business Forum. A Web site was developed and workshops have been held throughout the years on many topics.
