The Leelanau Scenic Heritage Route (M-22, M-109, M-204) serves as the primary corridor around the Leelanau Peninsula. The Route serves multiple purposes: major arteries of commerce for Leelanau County, scenic corridors for viewing some of the most memorable vistas, and a gateway to the Sleeping Bear Dunes National Lakeshore.

The landscape of the region is a combination of rural and near wilderness. Winding and scenic, the Heritage Route provides the traveler, whether local resident or visitor, the opportunity to experience the many unique villages and landscapes that are woven together in Leelanau County. The bays, lakes, rivers, streams, and lands are the resources that drive the economy of the region and contribute to the sense of identity of its residents.

In 2001, M-22 and M-109 were designated as a Scenic Heritage Route Corridor and a Leelanau Scenic Heritage Route Committee was established. In 2006, M-204 that connects M-22 on the east side of the County to M-22 on the west side was added as part of the designated Scenic Heritage Route.

The mission statement of the Committee is:

“To promote measures which protect and enhance the scenic, historical, and recreational characteristics of Michigan State Highways 22, 109, and 204 as they traverse the rural countryside and unique villages of Leelanau County.”

The Committee educates and assists in the decision-making process to provide an opportunity for everyone to experience the beauty and character that this region offers, while limiting the impact of increasing tourism on the daily life of local communities. This allows the residents of the Leelanau County a proactive way to participate in the protection of a Michigan Scenic Heritage Route.
