Energy and Environmental Management

The natural environment and energy are important components of our economy, our collective cultural history, and community health and quality of life. NWMCOG works on initiatives that preserve and enhance the high quality natural resources in our region. NWMCOG’s projects reflect a commitment to providing data, education, and technical assistance to local units of government and agencies that work to manage natural resources and systems, as well as businesses who choose to use energy-efficient systems and technologies while improving their bottom line. NWMCOG also acts as a convener for projects or processes that integrate environmental, economic, and social issues. The agency works in partnership with area agencies, educational institutions, non-profit groups, and local units of government on a variety of projects related to watershed management, wetland identification, hazard mitigation, water quality education, land use planning, solid waste planning, pollution prevention, and energy efficiency.

Energy auditors are going through county owned buildings in northern Michigan looking for ways counties can cut their energy use. The audits are funded by a Michigan Public Service Commission grant and which was awarded to the Northwest Michigan Council of Governments. Watch the video to find out more about the energy audits.
