Body Mechanics Intensive
4 Hours - Nursing credits available. AFC credits available.

  • Hands-on clinic will teach skills and techniques to transfer older adults safely, including basics of back safety, practice with walkers, lifts and wheel chairs
  • Gait belts
  • Challenging situations that occur when providing care, and strategies and solutions for working with older adults with dementia

Cleaning the Homes of Older Adults

  • The culture of cleaning
  • Communication skills
  • Understanding the needs of older adults
  • Detailed work plan with tips for efficient cleaning

This class is for direct care workers who work in the homes of older adults and persons with disabilities who perform these duties as part of their plan of care.

Cultural Diversity
4 Hours - Nursing credits available. AFC credits available.

  • Stereotypes and generalizations
  • Current diversity issues
  • Understanding basic personality differences
  • Working with Native American older adults

Dementia Intensive (level 1)
4 Hours - Nursing credits available. AFC credits available.

Overview of dementia including:

  • Symptoms and types of dementia
  • Brain changes that affect behavior
  • Developing a relationship with the person
  • Communication techniques that will help the direct care worker provide better care
  • Sources of challenging behaviors

Dementia and Problem Solving (level 2)
4 Hours - Nursing credits available. AFC credits available.

  • An in-depth review of the 3 most common types of dementia
  • Understanding challenging behaviors
  • Case studies from participants help to understand and practice a problem solving model

It is strongly recommended that you attend the Dementia Intensive class prior to taking this class.
